Muslims
believe that in 610 AD the angel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet Muhammad and
revealed to him the Koran, the holy book of Muslims. This revelation, Laylat Al-Qadar - or "Night of Power" - is said to have taken place during the
month of Ramadan. Muslims are fasting this month to commemorate the revelation
of the Koran.
What is meant by Ramadan?
It comes from
the Arabic word ramaḍān, which literally means "hot month", and from Ramadan, which means "drought". However, Ramadan is not tied to a
particular season. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 354
days, so the 12 months slowly cycle through the different seasons.
Why do Muslims
fast during Ramadan?
The practice
of fasting from dawn to dusk is at the heart of this Muslim holy month and for
the development of the Consciousness of Allah ("taqwa" in Arabic).
“That is the only thing God asks of us. And that's why Ramadan is so
special," he said. "It's actually a month of cleansing your sins.
